Our History
For over 100 years SMBC has been providing and servicing the Hartwell community with spitual healing. Sardis Missionary Baptist Church was organized in August 1868 by Rev. J.J. McMullen of White Sardis Baptist Church, along with Rev. James Williford, Rev. Andy Nix, Rev. William Brown, and Rev. A. J. McGarity of the Rocky River Association of South Carolina.

Our Pastor
Reverend Doctor Marcus Sturgeon is the pastor of Sardis Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC) in Hartwell, Georgia, which serves nearly 400 members. He is a native of Hartwell, Georgia and an educator, Dr. Sturgeon received a bachelors, masters, and a specialists degree in education from Georgia College and State University and Capella University respectively. He obtained his Doctorial degrees in Theology, Christian Education, and Divinity from the International Seminary, the Interfaith Seminary, and the School of Theology. Dr. Sturgeon is also a former member of the United States Navy. He is the coordinator and CEO of I.R.O.N.M.A.N. Mens Ministry, Inc... A much desired symposium orator, Dr. Sturgeon is well-known for his matter-of-fact approach to the Holy Scriptures, and encourages those in which he serves to pursue a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
